  • “Dragon Ball Z” is the sequel to “Dragon Ball”. Both were created by Akira Toriyama, a manga artist who earned recognition for his manga “Dr. Slump” prior to the creation of “Dragon Ball”.
  • Akira Toriyama has also worked as a character designer for popular video games, including Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger.
  • Before Akira Toriyama became a manga artist, he worked as a poster designer for a advertising agency. After 3 years, he quit his job and entered an amateur manga competition for Jump magazine, but lost.
  • A line in the animation dub of Dragon Ball Z states that Vegeta wears size 9 shoes.
  • Kazuhiko Torishima said that Dragon Ball “should’ve ended with the Friza saga”.
  • Torishima’s frustration at having Android 19 and 20 as villains prompted Toriyama to create Android 17 and 18. But Torishima also disliked Android 17 and 18, which led to the creation of Cell.



  • After Cell was founded, Toriyama’s editor Kondou complained about the character’s true insect appearance. He thought Cell was too ugly. So Toriyama turned Cell into his semi-perfect form, but Kondou also disliked the design, saying the villain “looked like an idiot”. This is why the Cell finally undergoes its final transformation into a perfect cell.

  • Initially, The Dragon Ball was based on the classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West. Goku is based on Sun Wukong and Bulma was based on Xuanzang.
  • While working on Dragon Ball, Toriyama didn’t plan the series in advance. He only drew and wrote as he went along. Sometimes he forgot the things he had predetermined. This would force him into a predicament that he had to write himself out of.
