Curse of Hatred: Flaw of the Mangekyou Sharingan!
The Sharingan, and in particular the Mangekyou Sharingan, first appeared in chapter 142 of the Naruto manga by Itachi Uchiha. Mangekyou Sharingan is known as one of the most powerful eyes in the Naruto universe, eyes that were possessed by the Uchiha clan, Kakashi Hatake and Danzo Shimura. To activate the regular Sharingan it requires an extreme flow of emotions towards loved ones, the brain then releases a special chakra which hits the optic nerve and turns the eyes into Sharingan.
The Sharingan’s pattern and abilities are the same for each Uhicha, three tomoe, and the ability to see chakra, mimic Jutsu, and improve perception skills. Mangekyou Sharingan, also known as kaleidoscope eye, is an evolutionary form of the regular Sharingan. The term kaleidoscope means an ever-changing pattern, and the shape and ability of Mangekyou Sharingan is different for each user, like Obito Uchiha’s space-time ninjutsu, Tsukuyomi Itachi’s illusionary genjutsu, Itachi and Sasuke’s Amaterasu inextinguishable black flame, and Kotoamatsukam Shisui Hypnosis Jutsu.
In order to activate the Mangekyou Sharingan, the user must experience a traumatic event related to his or her loved ones. The Mangekyou Sharingan utilizes a large amount of chakra from its users and when overused, the Mangekyou Sharingan will eventually blind the individual, the only way to deal with this is to take mangekyou eyes from a clan member who already possesses it and transplant them in your body. As stated by the second Hokage Tobirama Senju in chapter 619, the Uchiha clan is the clan that feels most loved, when they lose someone they deeply care about unique chakra flows into the Uchiha’s brain and affects the optic nerves, which makes up Sharingan. Sharingan reflects individual feelings of hopelessness and suffering and hence calls it a mirror wheel. The more experiences one has or the worse the tragedy, the stronger they become.
The Mangekyou Sharingan almost forces the individual to plunge into the path of darkness. The more power they gain and use, the more this lost love transforms their anger and hatred towards the world around them and they use their Sharingan as fuel for that hatred so they use their ability to have this aversion towards someone or group of people around the world. Through hatred stem stubbornness and unshakable embers. The Uchiha clan felt the greatest love but showed the greatest hatred.
The curse of hatred originates from the black Zetsu, which is the physical form of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, the mother of the chakra’s will. Kaguya had a son, Hagoromo, who would eventually become the sage of six paths. When the time came for Hagoromo to choose a successor between his two sons Ashura and Indra, he chose Ashura, who believed that peace could be achieved through love and friendship, contrary to his brothers’ ideals of independence, and attaining peace through strength and one’s own ability. Ashura and Indra were eventually reborn in Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha, followed by Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha. When Ashura was chosen, Indra’s was constantly tempted by black Zetsu forcing him and making him angry, with this Indra declared war on his brother. This battle was passed down from generation to generation eventually becoming the Uchiha versus Senju.
Madara Uchiha is considered the best proof of this curse because he loved his younger brother Izuna Uchiha so much. Izuna Uchiha was badly injured by Tobirama Senju before his eyes. Madara opened up his mangekyou and his dying brother gave him his own eyes as a final gift and gave him the eternal Mangekyou Sharingan and thus his hatred for Senju and will of fire came true, this hatred turned into a desire to transform the world and humanity and Madara would sacrifice everything he had to see it come true.
The only downside of achieving this power is that the mangekyou Sharingan as we know can be achieved by witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event. Obito got it by witnessing the death of Rins by Kakashi. Sasuke got his after killing his own brother. This is a flaw in the Naruto universe, as hard work and work ethic are key elements to becoming a strong shinobi if you work hard enough, you can reach your full potential. This can be seen in the case of Rock Lee, Might Guy despite their lack of ninjutsu they unlocked eight gates, in the case of Naruto even though he had nine tails inside of him, he still had to work really hard to master Rasengan and sage mode. These are all skills and techniques that require hard work.
The flaw of the Sharingan is that there is no alternative way to reach the next stage, an Uchiha cannot develop like other individuals in the Naruto universe just by hard work. The persistent cycle of hatred is a curse that needs to be broken more often, although there were a number of Uchiha who held to the will of fire, like Itachi and his efforts by destroying the entire Uchiha clan except for his brother to protect the leaf, Kagami Uchiha, who was fiercely loyal to the leaf and was one of the few Uchiha that Tobirama Senju trusted, and Obito, who resuscitated his will before sacrificing himself for the leaf, and finally Sasuke, who accepted the will of fire after succumbing to the curse of hatred at an extreme level and decided to travel the world with a new view on life as a torment for his wrongdoings.
